On the other side of the park, Connor strolls along the same walkways he uses during his shifts. One of the things that surprised him when he got the job working at the theme park was how different it felt coming into this very familiar place now that he was older and working. He remembered visiting the park with his family when he was younger. He was only in middle school when the park closed down, but he still has vivid memories of summer days spent with his siblings and parents running around the park trying to fit in as many rides as possible before the sun went down and the gates closed.
He could even remember the first time he was big enough to ride The Serpent. He had been waiting since he was just a little kid to get that opportunity. His older brothers rode the huge roller coaster with their father every time they went to the park. Sometimes they would stand in line two or three times throughout the day just to ride it again and again. His mother would stay down beneath the ride with Mason and his little sister, sometimes bringing them to nearby games or snack stands to placate them and keep them entertained while they waited for the rest of the family.
That worked for Molly. She was perfectly happy to try her hand at the âwinner every timeâ rubber duck game or balloon dart game, then sit in the shade and nibble her way through a sno-cone. Always rainbow. She didnât have any interest in the massive roller coaster. Just being near it and hearing the cars whip past overhead gave her a little shudder. She always said she would never get on the ride. When their mother would try to reassure Connor that one day he would be big enough to ride the ride, Molly would always reiterate she was never going to get on it. No matter how big she got, she wasnât ever going to ride the roller coaster.
âIâll just play games with you, Mama,â she would say, snuggling up to their motherâs side. Usually there was a drip of melted sno-cone down the front of her clothes. Those rainbow colors didnât translate as well when soaked into cotton.
The reassurances were never enough for Connor. He was impatient, frustrated at the height restriction and his slow rate of growth. He thought it was unfair that his older brother had been able to ride at his age and he still wasnât able to just because he hadnât grown the extra half an inch needed to reach that bright green line on the sign out front of the ride. He thought about that all through the next school year, promising himself he was going to grow, telling himself that when they showed up at the park the next summer, he was going to be able to ride the ride.
And he did.
That school year he grew so fast that his clothes and shoes couldnât keep up.
